Science and Industry Museum (mosi!)

After our tutorials, me and Hannah decided to nip to mosi!
We had a little look at the textile part, where all the old textile machines are...we also found a little display by Jennifer Collier in the corner...
Upstairs we also had a little (well quite a big and rather informative) science lesson, as there was a sciency-history exhibition about scientist that had come from/ been in Manchester for some part of their life, i.e John Dalton and Ernest Rutherford.
Rather Intersting!
Also went to the Whitworth, back to see Dark Matters, and also Airpressures; very good. Go see.

Book Design

I remembered that I went to the book design part in special collections some time last year, maybe it was this year, I am unsure, but I didn't upload any photos of what I went to see!!
Silly.
So here they are now. They aren't my favourites.
I didn't really know what I was looking for...But anyway.

Actually, they are actually much nicer/interesting that I thought.
I have no idea who they are by, but I do think that the lovely fabric book is by a famous (textiles famous/known/not unknown) textile artist?! and it was new in that day!
I am planning on going back, see what other lovely gems I can find...

Because...

...its a really nice drawing, and reminds me of Louise Bourgeios' drawings.

And I really like her drawings.

New Favourite...

ROANNA WELLS

I'm really sure I have seen her work at an MMU / Embroidery degree show/or somepart of Embroidery ...AND there is definitely a postcard of hers in the Holden Gallery (which is a lovely little postcard exhibition/auction on at the moment) but I can't find anywhere that says where she studied, BUT ANYWAY I think she has to be a new favourite.

Thanks to Hannah for pointing her out from DRAWN TO STITCH !

AMAZING possibly inspiration for life.

This is a tumblr I came across a few weeks back, it's sooo applicable to art/sketchbook/ideas/LIFE.
It's lovely for anyone who likes collections and layouts and things that look neat and ORGANIZED

I wish I had thought of it...

Maxine Bristow.

Maxine Bristow creates minimalist pieces made from cloth that illustrate her exploration of time, process and form and I really was intrigued by her ideas about Plain sewing how she uses traditional techniques as an expression of modernity; button holes, seaming and darning work, needlepoint and stitching.

I like that there is nothing decorated or crafty nor an obvious narrative in her work as she says ‘the strategy of keeping the works blank and neutral is that they become more resonant’.

Brass Art...

I decided to look into one of the artists from the dark matters project, venture back to where the first project all began...

BRASS ART 'explore real space and virtual space' by use of shadows, drawings, installations and performances...

'exploring the rich potential of old and new media'

'mixing traditional and contemporary skills'

I was also looking at their forthcoming events, and discovered there is soon to be some sort of exhibition at the Bronte Parsonnage, in Haworth!

Excellent news, as I did a project on the theme of the brontes on foundation, and was planning a little trip back...
More information to follow shortly I hope!

Cloth and Culture...

This was a fantastic exhibition (it even on a few years ago in manchester, that I went to see..) exploring textile art, 'innovative' and 'contemporary' from countries such as the UK, Finland and Japan.

I only just thought about this exhibition near the end of the last project, but no worries, I think it's definitely something I will be referring to in the future...and if not there are just lots of lovely artworks to view and admire.

A few of my favourites from the exhibition;

HELENA HIETANEN

ZANE BERZINA

PETERIS SIDARS

MAXINE BRISTOW

I seem to have picked out the ones with a more sculptural/installation pieces...some cloth, some not. They are quite simple and quiet (even Helena's bright halogen lights).

There are a few other artists I really like from this; Agneta Hobin, Freddie Robbins and Shelly Goldsmith, they may be making an appearance on the blog too at a later date...They are all excellent!
