GARY HUME
I was quite excited to see Gary Hume's Retrospective at Leeds Art Gallery, and I was not disappointed. The gloss paint, the colours, the materials, the space, the quietness, the whiteness and the sculptures in the entrance were all very satisfying.
Gloss paint; quite an intriguing material, leaving a glossy (obviously...) shine, and they were all quite pastely colours, and in a way, more like a sculpture because of the sections and the nature of the paint.
Four Doors ; I have seen the hospital doors in books before, and I just really liked the simplicity of them, the way they are put together and the composition within the doors. I listened in to a little video of Gary himself, saying how he 'wants the hospital doors to be impersonalised', they are 'institutional', and 'a door has no status'...
A few other artists of interest...
FRANK AUERBACH Paintings, thick oil paint, the application of the paint, the material and the way it was used caught my eye... IAN STEPENSON Dotty paintings, I quite like my dotted drawings, so this also was quite nice, collaged paper and multicoloured oil painted dots...
CARL PLACKMAN
I really liked Carl Plackmans' installations. Interesting arrangements and materials, lots of different media, especially in a row of imprints he made; blocks of wax and paper and such things. Layout is considered (he trained as an architect) so its interesting the way things are arranged and fit together, definitely someone I will be looking into a little bit more...
All in all, Leeds Art Gallery was a hit! Lots of new things, new people, new thoughts.
And I have never been to Leeds before, and so that was also quite nice.
